How to Think About the Cost of Capital

Rate is one input. Payment structure, covenants, collateral, and optionality often matter more.

Owners compare financing the way they compare quotes: by rate. Rate is the easiest number to see and frequently the least useful in isolation.

What actually determines the burden

Amortization schedule and payment frequency determine cash strain. A lower nominal rate paid daily over twelve months can be far heavier than a higher rate amortized over five years.

Collateral and covenants determine future flexibility — including whether the business can finance the next opportunity at all. Prepayment terms determine whether the position can be improved later.

The comparison worth making

Model total cash outflow per month against forecast operating cash flow, then ask what happens in a quarter that comes in 20% below plan. That stress case reveals more about a structure than any rate comparison.

Capital should solve a problem, not create another one.
